Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated nasal septum. The septum divides the nasal cavity into two parts and ensures free airflow. When it is deformed, air passage becomes obstructed, which can lead to chronic nasal congestion, frequent sinus infections, headaches, and fatigue. The operation is performed to restore normal nasal breathing, eliminate functional disorders, and improve the patient’s quality of life.
Indications for Septoplasty
Septoplasty is indicated in the following cases:
-
persistent difficulty breathing through the nose;
-
frequent sinus inflammations (sinusitis, rhinitis);
-
nosebleeds, dryness of the mucosa, snoring;
-
aesthetic deformity of the nose caused by septal deviation;
-
preparation for other nasal cavity surgeries.
Contraindications to Surgery
The procedure is not performed in the presence of acute infections, blood diseases, oncological conditions, severe cardiovascular disorders, or decompensated diabetes mellitus.
Before surgery, the patient undergoes a comprehensive examination to eliminate risks and determine the optimal treatment strategy.
Causes of Nasal Septum Deviation
Septal deformity may be congenital or acquired. Common causes include:
-
uneven growth of facial bones;
-
nasal trauma in childhood or adulthood;
-
compensatory deviation due to chronic mucosal swelling or polyps.
Over time, even minor curvature can cause breathing difficulties and require surgical correction.
Methods of Septoplasty
Classical Method
Performed under local or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision inside the nose, removes or reshapes the deformed portions of the septum while preserving its supporting function.
Laser Method
Used for minor deviations. The laser heats the cartilage tissue, making it pliable. After reshaping, the septum is fixed until healing occurs.
Advantages include minimal trauma, no bleeding, and a short recovery period.
Endoscopic Method
A modern minimally invasive technique where the surgeon operates under endoscopic control. This ensures high precision and minimal tissue damage.
Endoscopic septoplasty is often combined with the removal of polyps or turbinate correction.
Ultrasound Method
Applied when working with bone structures. Ultrasound gently acts on the bone tissue, allowing defects to be corrected without severe mucosal damage and with minimal swelling.
Radio Wave Method
Radio waves delicately separate and reshape septal tissues. The procedure causes minimal trauma and enables quick recovery of nasal breathing.
Preoperative Preparation
Before surgery, the patient undergoes an ENT examination, CT scan or X-ray of the nose, blood tests, ECG, and anesthesiologist consultation. Several days before the operation, vasoconstrictor drops, alcohol, and smoking are excluded. The doctor explains the surgical steps and the recovery process in detail.
How Is Septoplasty Performed?
Septoplasty is performed in a clinical setting under local or general anesthesia. The operation usually lasts from 30 to 90 minutes. The surgeon makes an internal incision, corrects the deviated cartilage and bone areas, then applies sutures and places soft tampons or silicone splints to fix the septum.
Recovery and Rehabilitation After Surgery
During the first few days, mild congestion, moderate swelling, and minor discharge may occur. Nasal breathing gradually improves, usually 7–10 days after splint removal. For one month, patients are advised to avoid physical exertion, overheating, sauna, and swimming. Complete mucosal healing takes about 4–6 weeks.
Complications and Risks After Septoplasty
As with any surgical procedure, minor complications are possible: bleeding, swelling, temporary loss of smell, or adhesion formation. Serious complications are rare, especially if the patient follows medical recommendations and maintains proper nasal care after surgery.
Results and Expectations
After recovery, breathing becomes free, snoring disappears, fatigue decreases, and the quality of sleep and overall well-being improve. Patients report feeling lightness and comfort within a few weeks after the operation.
Septoplasty in Russia
Clinics
Septoplasty in Russia is performed in leading multidisciplinary clinics that use modern endoscopic methods and follow international safety standards:
- RAMI — a clinic with a strong ENT department that performs endoscopic operations on the septum and paranasal sinuses. Special attention is paid to functional outcomes and rapid breathing recovery.
- EMC (European Medical Center) — a center where surgeries are performed using high-precision equipment. Gentle laser and radio wave techniques are used to minimize swelling and discomfort after surgery.
- Medsi — a large medical network where septoplasty is performed by experienced surgeons in a comfortable and safe environment. Patients receive a full range of services: diagnostics, surgery, and postoperative care.
Cost
The cost of surgery depends on the method, the extent of intervention, and the hospital conditions.
On average, the price of septoplasty in Russia starts from USD 1,000, including examination, anesthesia, and postoperative monitoring.
