In the structure of all organ transplantations, kidney transplantation ranks first in number of operations annually. Over the past three years, the number of kidney transplantations in Russia increased by 43%.

This was facilitated by opening new transplantation centers in regional clinics with methodological support from Russia's largest transplantation center—the Academician V.I. Shumakov NMRC of Transplantology and Artificial Organs.

Second in number of operations is partial or whole liver transplantation. Since 2022, the number of such interventions has nearly doubled—to 1,100.

Kidney and liver transplantation are multi-stage operations requiring high-tech rehabilitation, qualified personnel, careful postoperative monitoring, and long-term immunosuppressive therapy to prevent organ rejection.

Living related transplantation is even more technologically advanced, as it requires comprehensive donor examination to exclude contraindications to donation and confirmation of genetic relationship.

Often kidney transplantation is the only option for dialysis patients to radically improve quality of life in the absence of operation contraindications. Unlike hemodialysis, which requires visiting a medical center 3 times weekly for 4-5 hours, successful transplantation returns the patient to full life.

Liver transplantation is indicated for patients with end-stage cirrhosis of various etiologies (viral hepatitis, autoimmune diseases), acute liver failure, as well as for certain forms of early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma.

According to Russian statistics, approximately 10-12% of all kidney transplants and 43% of partial liver transplants are performed from living related donors. Precisely these operations are available to both Russian citizens and patients from abroad.

Among leading centers for liver and kidney transplantation in Russia, besides Shumakov NMRC, are the N.A. Lopatkin Research Institute of Urology and Interventional Radiology and B.V. Petrovsky Russian Scientific Center of Surgery in Moscow.
