Russian Medical Universities Are Ranked Among The Best Universities In The World

THE rating evaluates research universities based on 18 indicators divided into five blocks: the quality of education, the research environment, the quality of research, international activities, and interaction with the industry. It is in these areas that Russian medical universities have demonstrated their competitiveness at the global level.

The high positions of the leaders are explained by several factors. Firstly, the university has a well-developed research base: Sechenov University is the largest platform for preclinical and clinical research, as well as for piloting innovative medical technologies. Secondly, the university actively engages in international activities, with a 22-36% share of international students among the leaders of the Russian medical university segment.

I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Moscow) is the oldest medical university in Russia. The university has 21,900 students and employs 10 academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The university's clinical base includes five university hospitals with over 4,000 beds, where 62,000 patients are treated annually. The university operates three national medical research centers (urology, anesthesiology and resuscitation, and pulmonology), a biomedical research and technology park, and institutes for molecular, regenerative, and personalized medicine.

Bashkir State Medical University (Ufa) has 14,500 students. The university's uniqueness lies in its own multidisciplinary clinic, which is capable of testing and performing the most advanced surgical procedures in Russia. The clinic operates a da Vinci robot-assisted surgical system.

Kazan State Medical University (Kazan) is the leader among Russian medical universities in terms of the number of students who undergo practical training in foreign clinics annually. The university operates the first simulation center in Russia (the Center for Practical Skills), as well as its own central research laboratory and stem cell bank.

Other major medical universities in Russia are also listed in the ranking, including the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov (Saint Petersburg), the First Saint Petersburg State Medical University named after I.P. Pavlov, the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov (Moscow), the Volga Research Medical University (Nizhny Novgorod), the Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University, and the Samara State Medical University.

Earlier, Marus Media reported that 23,000 foreigners enrolled in Russian medical universities in 2024. Medical education is the leading field in terms of the number of foreign students among all programs in Russian universities. The number of applicants from BRICS and CIS countries is growing by an average of 20%, and by 2030, the number of foreigners in Russian medical universities will reach 140,000.
