US Approves da Vinci Robot for Cardiac Surgery

The FDA has approved use of the da Vinci 5 system for performing complex cardiac surgical interventions, primarily for mitral valve repair. The robot allows surgeons to sense the degree of force applied when working with tissues, which is critical for reducing trauma in cardiac operations.

The American regulator's clearance covers nine procedures, including mitral valve repair and replacement, left atrial appendage closure, and internal mammary artery mobilization for myocardial revascularization.

The da Vinci 5 from Intuitive allows surgeons to sense the degree of force applied when working with tissues thanks to the new Force Gauge instrument. The system is also equipped with a feature for reviewing key moments of surgery directly during the intervention without leaving the console (in-console video replay).

This is the first da Vinci robot planned for active use in cardiac operations in US, European, and other global clinics.

System implementation in American clinics, as the company clarified, will be phased due to the complexity of the work and need for staff training. The first devices will appear in ambulatory surgical centers with high operation volumes and existing da Vinci Xi versions. In parallel, Intuitive will continue working on obtaining approvals in Europe and other regions.

Currently, the most common operation using robots is prostatectomy (prostate removal). Hysterectomy (uterus removal) ranks second.

In Russia, da Vinci robots are also actively used, both in state medical centers and private surgical hospitals.

In Moscow, a robotic surgery development program is operating: by early 2026, the total number of systems in the capital's state hospitals reached 17, and approximately 30 systems are installed throughout Russia in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, Khanty-Mansiysk, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Krasnodar, and Rostov-on-Don.

Among private clinics, such interventions are performed at Medsi, Ilyinskaya Hospital, EMC, and as of 2025, at Mother and Child.
